Frequently Asked Questions
General Questions
Q: What are Knott Scholarships?
Knott Scholarships are awarded to academically high achieving Catholic students to attend Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Since their inception in 1982, it has been the dream of Henry and Marion Knott to allow students to be able to take advantage of the benefits of a Catholic education so that they would become leaders in their schools, communities, and the Catholic Church.
Q:  Are these scholarships given through the Knott Foundation?
No, they are not. The Marion I. & Henry J. Knott Foundation is a separate organization that provides funding to organizations in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Scholaships are awarded from the Knott Scholarship Funds. In any correspondence regarding a scholarship, inquiries should be made to the Knott Scholarship Funds.
Q:  What is expected of a Knott Scholar?
Knott Scholars are expected to maintain academic excellence as outlined by their specific scholarships.
Knott Scholars are expected to make Knott Scholarship Funds’ events a priority and participate in at least one Knott Scholarship Funds community project or social event each year.
They are expected to provide information on their activities annually through a Scholar Profile, which is distributed by the Knott Scholarship Funds office.
Knott Scholars are expected to maintain contact with the Knott Scholarship Funds office once they have graduated and are designated as Knott Scholar Alumni.
Knott Scholars are expected to be active participants in their university, church, and neighborhood communities.
Q:  What leadership opportunities are available for Knott Scholars?
Knott Scholars are encouraged to seek out leadership opportunities in their schools, parishes, and communities. Knott Scholarship Funds convenes a Knott Scholars Student Council for secondary students to apply leadership skills by planning and executing a variety of events. As an active member of our community, our Scholars are offered numerous and valuable opportunities to lead at our events, in our communications and with each other. Our team will communicate these opportunities to our Scholars, both past and present, on a consistent and timely basis.
Applying for a Scholarship (Collegiate)
Q: How do I apply for a Knott Scholarship for College?
For Collegiate Scholarship, go to the university tab of our Scholarship section, and review the initial criteria. If you meet the criteria, then click on the logo of the university you are interested in attending and you will be directed to their website to begin that application process.
Applying for a Scholarship (Secondary or Elementary)
Q: How do I apply for a Knott Scholarship for Secondary or Elementary School?
To begin the process for consideration of a Knott Scholarship, go to the “Scholarship” section of our website and locate the type of scholarship (Elementary, Secondary, or College) that applies to your family. Review all the criteria for your scholarship (they are not all the same) to determine if you or your child are eligible to apply. Once you (or your child) have determined that ALL the criteria are met, you are welcome to apply for whichever award you are interested in based on the deadlines listed. Students who do not meet ALL of the requirements are not eligible and should not apply. Exceptions are not made to our criteria.
You will be asked to establish an account with our vendor, Submittable, to process your application. When the application portal opens, you can review the application before you begin to complete it. For questions regarding establishing an account, etc., please review material from Submittable, accessible here: https://www.submittable.com/help/submitter
Q:  Should I wait or start the process now?
Our portal is open for applications for a specific period of time. Feel free to begin the application and save it to draft form as you complete different sections. Before beginning the process, verify:
Your student meets the grade requirements.
- Your student meets all testing requirements. Contact your school administration if you are unsure about the test scores.
- The student is Catholic and is an active member of a parish in the Archdiocese of Baltimore and meets our geographic requirements.
If your application is submitted your reference/evaluation will be added to the application automatically. You do not need to wait for that notification to apply.
Q: We are not sure what high school my child will attend. Should I wait to apply ?
NO. Once you have determined the initial criteria are met, you should begin the application process. When the application is saved to draft form, your evaluator/reference is notified and can complete their portion. Waiting until the week the applications are due may not allow adequate time to address any questions or concerns from the Knott Scholarship Funds. All secondary applications that are submitted prior to the high school acceptance letters are re-opened so that you may indicate the high school of your choice and upload the acceptance letter.
Q: How do I know if there are any issues with the application?
The Knott Scholarship Funds office will contact you if there is an issue with your application. We will confirm when all materials have been received. Applications are reviewed for completeness in the order received.
Q: My student has missed one of the criteria by a single point. Do you make exceptions?
Each year we receive more qualified applications than funds to distribute. We therefore do not make any exceptions to our application criteria.
Q: How should I proceed?
We recommend the following:
January/Early February: Verify all your child’s grades and test scores, especially the Winter MAP test. Make sure you have all contact information for both the current and proposed school and your documentation (Baptismal Certificate, Parish Verification Form) at your disposal.
Begin your application, saving it in draft form and then submitting it when you have completed all the information for which you are responsible. You will be notified once your evaluator/reference completes their portion, and if there are any questions or omissions with your application. Then, the KSF Office will re-open your application once the acceptance letters (for secondary school) or the confirmation of enrollment information (for elementary school) are available.
Application Process
- Read through all the general application requirements listed below. Students who do not meet ALL the necessary requirements will not be considered for the scholarship and need not apply. Only qualifying applications will be reviewed. Our FAQ’s provide additional information on how to navigate the application process.
FOR ALL APPLICANTS:
- Before beginning, parents should collect and have readily available:
- A copy of your child’s baptismal certificate
- Contact information for your child’s current principal
- Contact information for the principal of the school your child hopes to attend
- A person identified who knows your child well (either the principal, guidance counselor, or current teacher) who will fill out the evaluation portion of the application, along with their contact information.
- Parents should download the following form, complete the top portion, and submit the form to their registered parish for completion. Once the completed form is returned to the parent or guardian, it can be uploaded with the application. The form must be dated no earlier than January 5, 2026. We will not accept the form from the parish, it must be uploaded as part of the application. To download the Parish Verification Form, click here.

TO BEGIN THE PROCESS:
- Parents may begin their child’s application by accessing the portal beginning on Wednesday, January 28th, 2026. Parents are welcome to return to the application as often as needed, while it is in draft form, to complete it before final submission. Should any additional material be required, the Knott Scholarship Office will notify the applicant and re-open the application if necessary.
- There is an essay component for the application. Once you have begun your application, you will see the essay prompt. That essay must be submitted in your child’s own legible handwriting.
- As soon as the application is submitted, the principal and/or reference is notified that they have an application pending. The Knott Scholarship Funds Office will inform you when all portions of the application are received. You will be notified when the evaluation is submitted. The application can be submitted before the evaluation is received and it will automatically upload to our application.
For Students currently enrolled in Archdiocesan Schools:
- It is the responsibility of the principal to upload all required information regarding the student before the deadline if they are designated the reference/evaluator. If the principal is not the designated reference/evaluator, it is the responsibility of that person to fill out the reference form and submit it before the deadline.
- Grades and test scores will be supplied by the Archdiocese directly to the Knott Scholarship Funds offices. The principal does not have to input any grades or test scores.
For Students who are not currently enrolled in an Archdiocesan School:
- Non-Archdiocesan schools include Independent Catholic, Private, Public, or Home School. For these applicants, is the responsibility of the principal to upload all requested information and documentation to the application before the deadline. This will include grades, converted into numerical values if needed, for the last grading period of 3rd grade and the first grading period of 4th grade. If chosen as the reference/evaluator, the principal must complete that portion of the application as well. If the principal is not the designated reference/evaluator, it is the responsibility of the reference to fill out the reference form and submit it before the deadline.
- For public schools, the grade conversion may have to be accomplished by the guidance office. It is suggested you reach out to them as well at this time.
- For home school students, please click here for additional information.
- Completed applications are submitted to the Knott Scholarship Funds office for evaluation.
- Announcement of Knott Scholarship Funds Awardees will be made around April 14, 2026

- Students exempt from tuition due to a parent’s employment by the school or parish are eligible to apply. Scholarship payments must be applied to that student’s tuition. The school has the discretion to apply its exemption to other expenses.
- Students are ranked according to the data submitted. We do not accept, nor do we read, letters of recommendation or support.

- BY APPLYING FOR A KNOTT SCHOLARSHIP, STUDENTS, PARENTS, GUARDIANS AND SCHOOL PERSONNEL AGREE THAT ALL INFORMATION RECEIVED BY THE KNOTT SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS, REGARDING GRADES, TEST SCORE, EVALUATION, OR TAX RETURNS, FROM ANY SOURCE, IS STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL AND WILL NOT BE DISCLOSED OR DISCUSSED WITH ANYONE, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO: APPLICANTS, PARENTS, GUARDIANS OR SCHOOL PERSONNEL. ALL DECISIONS ARE FINAL.
Financial Need
Knott Scholarships are based primarily on outstanding academic achievement. However, a small amount of consideration may be given for extreme financial need. The applicant must meet all requirements stated above, including all academic requirements, before financial need is considered.
To determine eligibility for this consideration we use FACTS. A link to the FACTS form and the code you will need to use it are embedded in the portal application.
Tax information may be required ONLY IF you have submitted information through FACTS. If you are not asking for financial need consideration, no tax information will be required. The Knott Scholarship Fund office reserves the right to request copies of your latest Federal Income Tax return, including all schedules if used.
